A senior aide to Abu Dhabi’s ruler, MBZ, was identified as the mystery broker in Man City’s £30M sponsorship scandal, as per UEFA’s 2020 investigation. However, leaked UEFA documents reveal Jaber Mohamed, MBZ’s top aide until 2022, orchestrated payments from Etisalat to Man City between 2012–2013.
Shockingly, UEFA ruled the £30M was “disguised equity funding” from owners, not genuine sponsorships, in their 2020 adjudication report. Despite this, City escaped punishment as charges were “time-barred” per CAS—but the Premier League’s case (2018–present) has stronger evidence.
Crucially, Jaber Mohamed was General Director of Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Court (2005–2022), proving UAE govt ties to City’s finances. Emails from 2012 show £15M payments from Jaber’s personal account, not Etisalat’s, exposing the sponsorship as a sham.
As far as evidence goes, Jaber’s Instagram posts with Aguero, Silva, and chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak confirm his deep club connections. Additionally, CPC Undersecretary Mohamed Al Mazrouei sat on City’s board (2010–2022) during these deals, raising conflict-of-interest questions.
In February 2023, The Premier League accused City of 115 breaches, including hiding salaries, inflating sponsorships, and obstructing investigations. For instance, Etisalat’s “sponsorship” was a front; UEFA found the £30M came from Abu Dhabi royals, not the telecom giant.
Der Spiegel’s 2018 leaks exposed emails where City execs discussed “rerouting” funds to bypass FFP rules, key evidence in the PL case. Roberto Mancini’s (2010–2013) £1.75M side deal with Al Jazira, an Abu Dhabi club, was likely a disguised salary, per leaked documents.
Similarly, Yaya Touré’s image-rights payments were allegedly made by Sheikh Mansour’s ADUG, not City, to evade FFP scrutiny. City’s owner, Sheikh Mansour, is UAE’s VP—while his brother MBZ’s aides (Jaber, Al Mazrouei) ran the financial schemes.
Unlike UEFA, the Premier League secured new documents post-2020, including bank records, to prove City’s deception. Man City insists they’re privately owned, but the CPC’s involvement suggests state control, a violation of Premier League rules.
Beyond football, Abu Dhabi uses City for “sportswashing,” leveraging the club’s success to whitewash its controversial image. The verdict, due by May 2025, could relegate City, though the club will likely appeal, dragging the saga for years.
Fans are divided, some blame a “witch hunt,” while others demand transparency—especially after Everton’s 2024 points deduction. This case isn’t just about FFP, it’s about Gulf states using football clubs as geopolitical tools to gain global influence.
If Man City is punished, Abu Dhabi’s royal family could face unprecedented scrutiny over their football empire. The Premier League’s verdict drops soon—it could change football ‘s financial landscape and ownership rules.
Stay tuned for the verdict!
