Story Good evening, I’m John Carr, and this is your top story on Spotlight News TV tonight.
Former Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson and city politician Derek Hatton have been formally charged with bribery and misconduct in connection with council contracts. These charges come as part of an ongoing investigation led by Merseyside Police, dubbed Operation Aloft, which has focused on a number of property developers in the region.
Anderson, who served as mayor from 2012 to 2021, and Hatton, a prominent figure in local politics, were both arrested back in 2020 in relation to an inquiry into the awarding of construction contracts. Following these new charges, Anderson has denied any wrongdoing. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Anderson addressed the public, urging them not to make assumptions. He stated, quote, “I am innocent of the charges and will fight to clear my name. Thank you for all the messages of support.”
A father of four, Anderson had been a Labour councillor in Liverpool since 1998 before taking on the role of mayor.
Merseyside Police confirmed that 12 individuals in total have been charged, all related to the investigation concerning commercial and business contracts awarded by Liverpool City Council between 2010 and 2020.
In response, Liverpool City Council said it has fully supported the police investigation and will continue to assist in any way necessary. However, a spokesperson for the council added that it would be inappropriate to provide further comment at this stage.
