India: CBI Probes Corruption Charges Against Ex-Principal of RG Kar Medical College
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its probe in the Kolkata rape and murder case. The agency raided the house of Sandip Ghosh, ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and 14 other locations linked to the case. The raids were in connection to corruption charges against Ghosh. CBI is probing financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College during Ghosh’s term. The probe was launched after a plea was filed by the hospital’s ex-deputy superintendent Dr Akhtar Ali, who claimed malpractices and financial scams. According to Ali’s plea, Ghosh illegally used unclaimed corpses, sold biomedical waste and pressurised students to pay money ranging from 5,00,000 to 8,00,000 to pass the exam. The corruption charges followed the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the college on August 9. The prime suspect of the case Sanjay Roy is currently in jail, where he took a lie detection test on August 25. The incident triggered nationwide protests.
