“Be happy with who you are and appreciate every moment of life that you have…Know that you can give the love to somebody besides yourself.”

Meet “Marcus”. Born on the west side of Chicago, Marcus joined a gang as a kid. The streets became a way of life for Marcus and he enjoyed the fame and rush of “having things how I wanted when I wanted.” Looking back at the street violence he was part of, Marcus sees the hurt and corruption that comes with being involved in a gang and is now commited to changing his environment. Marcus is trying to stop the violence and better himself so that he can be there for his wife and children. Currently, Marcus works in construction doing whatever jobs that come around. He is looking to go back to school and is in the process of creating an entertainment business that promotes musical artists.

“A person can make it if they try. Try to get out of the negativity and stay strong. Hold on and fight your troubles. Make peace if you can.”

What’s important to Marcus is making a difference in his community, being strong and finding peace. He wants to be successful, truthful, and impactful. During his interview, Marcus talks about his experience on the streets and his regrets of causing pain to others and dropping out of school. Through all of his struggles, Marcus has found the courage to say no to violence and is proud to be the change that he wants to become. Although he wishes he would have listened to his mother more, Marcus is glad that he has finally found his purpose in life. He ends his interview by sharing wisdom on the importance of giving love to others and wanting to make a difference in this world.
