Vietnam Property Tycoon Truong My Lan Slapped With Death Penalty Over Largest-Ever $27Bn Fraud Case

A top Vietnamese property tycoon has been sentenced to death in one of the biggest corruption cases in history. Truong My Lan, 68, chair of major developer Van Thinh Phat, was accused of swindling the cash from Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) over a decade. The sentencing comes after Lan and 85 others faced a five-week trial in the business hub Ho Chi Minh City. The list of co-accused includes former central bankers, ex-government officials and previous SCB executives. They are charged with bribery, abuse of power to appropriation and violations of banking law. Lan allegedly embezzled $12.5 billion, but the prosecutors said the total damages caused by the scam now amounted to $27 billion. Watch the video to find out more.
