Former Los Angeles City Councilmember Jose Huizar was sentenced to 13 years in prison for corruption schemes that benefited him with cash payouts, Las Vegas gambling, sex workers and other bribes from developers seeking to build in his downtown district.

U.S. District Court Judge John F. Walter handed down the siftest sentence yet for a city officials involved in a corruption case.
He said Huizar had been the prime architect of a criminal enterprise that relied on bribery, extortion, obstruction of justice and other crimes to achieve its goals — enriching himself and expanding his political power.

Huizar will also have to pay nearly $444,000 in restitution to the city of Los Angeles and nearly $39,000 to the IRS. He has to turn himself in on April 30th.
