Darren grew up in St. Louis, unaware that assassination attempts, FBI investigations, and witness protection programs were not supposed to be a normal part of life. His father, Red, who was a founding member of the iconic soul group The Chi Lites, fell victim to mobs in the music industry like many black artists of that time. They were subjected to unfair contracts and agreements by corrupt record executives and banksters.
