How Fox News Creates Propaganda Without Consequences (Usually)

Fox News is known for saying wildly inaccurate, extremely partisan, far right nonsense constantly. Technically, they are a new organization and are held to certain ethical standards. So how do they get away with reporting these things that have no evidence? We know after their settlement with Dominion their system isn’t perfect, but let’s take a look at a recent made up story to see how it’s done.

Two random Senators (or Congressmen I forget) said they heard from an unnamed source that the FBI had documents from a secret whistleblower implicating Joe Biden in a bribery scandal when he was vice president. You may be thinking to yourself- is there even a primary source listed in that story? No. No there isn’t. Has anyone seen this document? No. Has the source or the whistleblower been identified? No. Has their position at least been stated so we know they plausibly could have gotten this information? No.

Okay well obviously this isn’t news. This is nothing. This is a bad game of telephone that seems like it could open them up to another libel lawsuit. Well that’s where the trick comes in. Fox isn’t reporting that an FBI file linking Biden to a scandal was leaked. Because that story is obviously false. Fox is reporting that these two guys are saying that happened. Which is true. Those guys did say that. They even came on Fox News to say it directly to the audience. Fox is just asking questions.

It’s almost impressive the way they’ve set this up. A lot of the time they don’t even use an outside source. They just report on what one of their own commentators is saying. No fact checking required. And they throw in plenty of buzz words to make sure their audience isn’t thinking critically. Hunter Biden, China, scandal, FBI investigation, coverup, shady business ties. They use them all. The audience comes away from it thinking they’ve just heard a breaking news story instead of a poorly crafted fanfic. It’s manipulative and depressing, but they’ll keep doing it as long as they keep getting away with it.
