Faqeer Sein: In the name of Kashmir, we have committed economic suicide

0

Faqeer Sein is the pen name of Khalid Chishti. He is a former president of the Progressive Writers Association, Islamabad. He is known for his thought-provoking poetry. He was born in a village in Sambrial tehsil of Sialkot district.

In 1980, he graduated as an electronics engineer from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. He joined a multinational oilfield service company immediately upon graduation and retired from the oil sector as a petro-physicist.

He served in Kuwait, England, Scotland, Pakistan, Libya, Indonesia, the UAE and Yemen for over 21 years. He also had short-term stints in Germany, Japan, Singapore and the United States. Subsequently, he spent 14 years with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

Capitalizing on his exposure to the world to make sense of the ills afflicting Pakistan, he began writing in 2003. So far, he has published two books:

1. Perils of Self-righteousness (English) 2011
2. Apne Giraiban ka Safar (Urdu poetry) 2011

His areas of interest include population explosion, Indophobia and financial corruption.

1. Population explosion
Became conscious of the problem at an early age when a teacher in class 9 explained the land fragmentation mechanism, i.e., farmland holdings shrinking over generations when families are large… Was happy to see China introduce one-child policy… Feels that Pakistan is suffering seriously from unbridled population growth… Strong proponent of population control legislation.

2. Indophobia
Started having a different opinion about it at age 13… post-Simla agreement… Could not get a handle on why a cunning and eternal enemy would so easily return thousands of soldiers with such ease. Have always been critical of wasting scarce resources on military and nukes. These resources need to spent judiciously for nation building.

3. Financial corruption
Has a theory that roots of financial corruption can be correlated with religious mindset.
