SHILLONG:

The All-India Congress Committee (AICC) leaders have a word of caution for the National People’s Party (NPP) and other regional parties to be wary of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), as the saffron party will soon overpower them.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) media coordinators Bobeeta Sharma and Mathew Anthony were in the state and interacted with media coordinators on January 19 wherein they pointed how the BJP destroyed regional parties in other states.

Anthony said, “Look at the BJP’s antecedents – look at Nitish (Kumar), Shiv Sena, AIADMK everywhere that the BJP has tied up, it has destroyed them, why should then NPP not fear the BJP in the near future?”

Both leaders agreed that the BJP has already started buying the candidates NPP and it is not very long that they will end up like AGP (Asom Gana Parishad).

“You (the BJP) are buying MLAs because when you cannot win the elections with the people’s mandate, you are cheating the people of the country by buying them money and threatening them with ED and CBI, have the courage to face the people, win the mandate by the people’s choice rather than buying them,” Anthony said.

Sharma said posters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and why need Modi’s posters here when CM is an NPP, their long-term strategy, it should be a warning to NPP

Stating that the Congress is coming out with a fresh look, Sharma said that the first list of candidates will soon come out and pointed out that the Congress will have a new perspective with new and young faces who are socially committed and educated, and there will be a lot of women candidates.

She turned to the corruption in the MDA government wherein the MDA ally, the BJP said that the government is corrupt but he did not take any action.

“In Assam, the BJP always piggy-rides on the regional party and then they swallow up the regional parties. They (BJP) have no candidates in Assam but they rode on the back of the AGP and then they tried to make inroads into the political scene of the state of Assam.”

She took a dig at the state BJP for having only two candidates yet to make it look like a BJP state as there are BJP posters on display on the way to Shillong from Guwahati

Commenting on the BJP threats to pull out of the government, Sharma said, “NPP will soon be swallowed by the BJP and that is why they are not pulling out because they have their own interest in hand.”

Sharma said, “The Congress believes that regional parties should also exist. We have never tried to swallow any regional party. We have given them space to grow and it is very important to have regional aspirations. The Congress respects that, BJP only wants their party to win and does not want regionalism at all.”

Anthony said that the BJP brazenly used their power to oppress the people to toe their line.

Another media coordinator Mathew Anthony said the BJP has a vested interest in staying in the government and the corruption is not done by one alliance partner and said, “The looting is shared.”

Asserting that the people of the state have not rejected the Congress, Sharma said that the BJP is attacking the personal beliefs of the people of the country.

Frame a chargesheet against NPP, BJP

Asked whether the Congress will frame a chargesheet against the NPP, BJP, Sharma said “Of course, we will see in the days to come, we will have a chargesheet against them.”

Commenting on the reason for the exit of MLAs, Anthony said, “Temptations with fear. What if I put a gun to your head and say if you don’t join me, you will lose your life. If I get a notice from a central agency and I say that I am going to put away all your transactions and if you don’t join me a case will be filed against you.”

As for the All-India Trinamool Congress, he claimed that it is the second party generating wealth besides the BJP.
