Current erudite paradigms of polite speech and good manners have largely yielded lacklustre debate and failed to produce a robust and instructive lexicon on the validity and complexities of black pain and suffering in a democratic South Africa.
On the 45th anniversary of the murder of Steve Biko Bantu, and on the 76th birthday of the late iconic poet Mafika Pascal Gwala, Black Consciousness is worth another serious look — not as a narrow political tool in the hands of political opportunism, but as a point of return for a language that makes it sensible and possible to openly destabilise colonial and institutional racism, as well as the stubborn daily nightmare of whiteness.
