Readers sound off on Biden’s messaging, Italian fascism and housing opponents – New York Daily News

East Brunswick, N.J.: When so-called news anchor Joy Reid makes a comment that “neo-fascism won out today in Italy,” she has given license once again to activate the sick, self-proclaimed morality police to kill those who don’t agree with their views politically.

Joe Biden saying that 50% of voting Americans are semi-fascists because their opinions don’t agree with his, and members of Congress repeating his sentiments, opens the door to people like Shannon Brandt, the 41-year-old drunk who drove over the 18-year-old boy who was crying to his mother on the phone that he was being chased, apparently because he was a so-called Republican extremist, according to the driver. Brandt killed Cayler Ellingson because his president sent a message that the boy’s life was worth less than a Democrat’s.

Now Reid’s statement — false as it is, yet no one called her on it — has brought hate to the forefront once again. Perhaps it’s out of fear that her party of “tolerance” is about to be run over in November. Perhaps it’s just her sheer ignorance — who knows? People with microphones should be careful of the words they spew because those listening — to her, especially — aren’t exactly self-thinkers.

The party of tolerance should look within. You’ve become the party of hate and ugliness. Lisa Maniaci

Saddle Brook, N.J.: Giorgia Meloni is on track to become Italy’s first female prime minister. Unfortunately, Meloni’s coalition government will be the most ultra-right-wing government since Benito Mussolini’s. Meloni’s political party, Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy), is radical-right with neo-fascist roots. Meloni has openly praised Mussolini as a good politician who did everything he could for Italy. She also praised Giorgio Almirante, the co-founder of the fascist Italian Social Movement party, a Nazi collaborator and the editor-in-chief of the anti-Semitic, racist magazine La Difesa della Razza (In Defense of Race). Meloni’s agenda is ultra-conservative. She is opposed to non-European immigrants — namely, African and Middle Eastern — and multiculturalism. Nor does Meloni support partnerships, marriages and parenting by same-gender couples. Italy had Il Duce for some 20 years. Now, Italy will have “La Duchessa.” Coincidentally, Meloni’s political party’s slogan is “Ready to Revive Italy.” Kind of reminds me of another fascist campaign slogan: “Make America Great Again.” Tina Greco

Bayville, L.I.: I am really starting to doubt all branches of government for their delays in indicting and prosecuting a person who is a liar and criminal who has done everything to destroy our democracy. But because he was president, he seems to be immune from being charged for his crimes. I believe he is guilty of rape and had many affairs on the campaign trail in 2015 and 2016. He had the title of the highest position in our country but by no means was he a president for the people. He wanted and used the power for whatever benefited him. He paid off Stormy Daniels. I’m sure there are others who were paid off and couldn’t come forward. The man is a disgrace, an embarrassment to our country, and justice needs to be served. Elaine Ervolino

Jamaica: To vote for Republicans who have no agenda will not help you or your family. Republicans just want to take things away and go on a revenge agenda. They will take away Social Security, Medicare, healthcare and more. They already took away Roe v. Wade — women should be able to make up their minds about their own bodies. They want to have hearings about Hunter Biden and to impeach President Biden if they take control of the House of Representatives. If they take control of Congress, we will never get voting rights secured. Charlene Black

Brooklyn: Section 2 of the 14th Amendment requires that states that deny citizens the right to vote in state or federal elections have their representation in the House of Representatives reduced. Section 5 of the 14th Amendment gives Congress the power to enforce this legislation by law. Given the Republican Party’s concern for voter integrity and the Democratic Party’s concern for voting rights, why not ask every senator and representative why this constitutional deterrent to voter suppression has never been enforced? Does either party have a better solution to the pursuit of power by unconstitutional means? Naceo Giles

Fair Lawn, N.J.: The reforms to the Electoral Count Act are welcome. What would be better would be the total elimination of the Electoral College and allowing the direct election of the president of the United States by the people of the United States. Repealing the Reapportionment Act of 1929 would also be a good idea. Jim Wrynn

Morristown, N.J.: Regarding Gov. Hochul’s endorsement by the New York State Police Benevolent Association, President Jim McCartney is a politics-playing fraud. He sold the endorsement for a 2% raise. And the anonymous “spokeswoman” for Hochul outright lied when she said that the endorsement process did not include any contract talk. She knows it did, but lies through her teeth to cover for her boss, the corrupt, thieving Hochul. If the media actually investigated this bought-and-paid-for endorsement, they’d be able to dig up the truth. Sadly, Democrats/libs do not police their own and the media is blatantly biased, acting as a buffer and mouthpiece for the left. So the Albany corruption continues. Frank J. Perry

Long Beach, L.I.: Soon, Aaron Judge will break the single-season home run record held by Roger Maris. When he does so — at the next home game — the Yankees owners should surprise him with the captain jersey. Judge has five qualities my favorite Yankee captain (Thurman Munson) had: exceptional talent, grit, humility, his teammates’ respect and, most importantly, love of the game. Our world desperately needs what Judge innately possesses. Dana Fuchs

Brooklyn: We learned that the councilwoman from the Bronx who represents the Bruckner area, Marjorie Velazquez, is going to oppose the most recent proposal to build affordable housing. This is not unusual, as we have seen the former councilman of Inwood who is now our Department of Transportation commissioner, Ydanis Rodriguez, oppose a project there a few years ago. We have also seen former Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, a staunch progressive from Queens, oppose affordable housing in his area. In addition, we have recently seen the council member from Harlem, Kristin Jordan, oppose a large affordable housing project in her area. When are these progressive hypocrites going to admit that they are one of the main reasons for homelessness in the city? Robert Mascali

North Stockbridge, Ga.: I watched with horror the callous act of violence towards Elizabeth Gomes in the Queens subway station (” ‘Pain all over’ after unprovoked attack,” Sept. 28). I grew up in the city and am ashamed of it, especially of those who are doing nothing to improve safety. Shame on our criminal justice system for allowing repeat violent offenders to roam our streets with impunity. They are being released into society without any obvious rehabilitation or purpose. Shame on our elected officials who pander for votes but are not accountable for their repeated failures as they ignore any responsibility for their epic incompetence and have no solutions. Shame on our citizens for their sightless voting and toleration of the pathetic excuses of those in power. Finally, unless Waheed Foster was the only other person on that train, shame on the other riders for leaving her to be hunted and attacked without intervening. Derek Mouzon

Manhattan: It is high time we start to wonder why all the killings and muggings are going on all over. There are crimes upstate and in NYC — shootings and other crimes. Why all the shootings and stabbings in NYC? It is happening more among the seniors of NYC, my hometown. As a senior, I saw a change in the city. I’m very sad to say this, but we need the National Guard in all five boroughs to check IDs after curfew. Give the cities back to the police and let them all do their jobs. Helen Murphy
