Varsity director held for alleged bribery

MELAKA: A departmental director of a public university here was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly accepting a luxury car from a contractor as an inducement to approve a RM1.6mil project.

A source from the MACC said the head of the facility ma nagement department at the institution was arrested on Monday evening when he went to the Melaka MACC office in Alai to have his statement taken.

The source added that the suspect had allegedly received a Honda Accord 2.4 worth about RM174,500 from a Klang-based contractor as a reward for approving the project for the company, where the bidding process was first offered through an open tender.

State MACC director Mohd Shahril Che Saad confirmed the arrest. He added that the case was being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

The suspect was produced at the Ayer Keroh Court complex yesterday to be remanded.
