Hey folks, here is another crucial “What if?” question. What if you’re the victim of police misconduct? I’m sorry to hear that, but it does happen, and you have several options.
First, you need a civil rights attorney. These attorneys handle lawsuits against police departments for brutality, harassment, excessive force, and other misconduct.
Second, make sure you have documented everything. Proper documentation is key to building your case.
Additionally, every law enforcement agency has an internal affairs department. Filing a complaint helps improve the agency and brings attention to officers who aren’t doing their job properly. I recommend filing this complaint with the oversight of an attorney; don’t file this without speaking to a civil rights attorney first.
I’ve been defending criminal cases here in Central Florida for over 30 years, so trust me, knowing your rights and options is essential. I don’t handle civil rights cases like this, but I know people who do, so feel free to reach out and I’ll put you in touch with someone.
