United States Appreciates Tanzania’s Repatriation of Displaced Persons from Northeast Syria

With U.S. government assistance, Tanzania repatriated one woman and three children from the Roj displaced persons camp in northeast Syria on Monday, August 11.

Approximately 14,500 individuals from more than 70 countries outside Syria remain in the al-Hol and Roj camps, most of whom are children under the age of 12.

The only durable solution to the humanitarian and security crisis in these displaced persons camps in northeast Syria is for countries of origin to repatriate, rehabilitate, reintegrate, and where appropriate, ensure accountability for their nationals. Repatriation will also reduce the risk of an ISIS resurgence in the region and help ensure a stable future for Syria.

The United States thanks Tanzania for working with us to repatriate its nationals, and thanks our local partners, the Syrian Democratic Forces, for their assistance facilitating this repatriation and their commitment to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS.
