On Wednesday, Mukul Rohatgi, a senior lawyer and former Attorney General, refuted the accusations made in the US Department of Justice (DOJ) indictment against Adani Group founder Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani. Rohatgi emphasized that neither Gautam Adani nor Sagar Adani has been named in the key charges related to bribery or obstruction of justice. “Count 1 and Count 5, which are the most critical charges, do not mention either Gautam Adani or Sagar Adani,” Rohatgi stated, clarifying that he was speaking in his personal capacity. He further described claims to the contrary as “completely inaccurate.” Similarly, senior lawyer and former Rajya Sabha MP Mahesh Jethmalani criticized the DOJ indictment, calling it speculative and lacking in substantive evidence. “There is no allegation of bribery within India. The charge merely suggests a conspiracy to bribe, with no concrete proof,” Jethmalani remarked. He elaborated that the case centers around bond issuances by Adani Green Energy, where the DOJ alleges that bondholders were not informed of possible violations. “This is an assumption, not evidence, and there is no mention of any breach of Indian law,” he added.
