Law firm to host community event on police brutality in Winter Haven

This weekend, a high-powered Cleveland-based law firm specializing in police brutality cases will host a community event in Winter Haven, aiming to foster dialogue between local law enforcement and the community.

Attorney Robert DiCello, who represents numerous clients alleging police misconduct nationwide, is spearheading the event to address what he calls outdated policies promoting adversarial relationships between law enforcement and residents.

DiCello emphasized the importance of open communication, stating, “Let’s cut out the insults. We’re grown-ups. Let’s talk to each other.” He highlighted that his firm represents nearly a dozen clients from Polk County alone, underscoring the region’s challenges with law enforcement practices.

The event, scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Church of God the Bible Way in Winter Haven, will feature local clergy, alleged victims and community members.

Although law enforcement representatives are also encouraged to attend, Lakeland PD has said they were not invited and do not plan to attend.

DiCello hopes the gathering will encourage departments to adopt industry standards such as requiring officers to carry insurance and limiting unnecessary engagements with law enforcement.

Pastor Clayton Cowart of the Poor Minority Justice Association echoed DiCello’s sentiments, saying, “The police department belongs to the people, and we are holding you accountable.”
