ICE agents smash car window to arrest asylum-seeker



A Massachusetts family is demanding answers from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after agents smashed a car window with a hammer and detained a man they say had applied for asylum. According to attorney Ondine Galvez-Sniffin, federal officers arrested Juan Francisco Mendez in New Bedford on Monday while he was driving to a dentist appointment.

The incident, recorded by Mendez’s wife, Marilu Domingo Ortiz, shows ICE agents using a hammer to break the car window. Ortiz and their 9-year-old son have already been granted asylum due to fears of persecution in Guatemala. Galvez-Sniffin said Mendez had lived in the US for four years, worked in the seafood industry, had no criminal record, and was in the process of seeking asylum.

“There really was no reason to treat him the way that he and his wife were treated,” she said.

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell said on X that the incident “raises questions that require clear answers,” including why local police weren’t notified in advance. He also questioned whether ICE is focusing on criminals, as promised, or carrying out “an indiscriminate round-up of individuals with uncertain immigration status.”
