On behalf of the United States, I extend my warmest congratulations to the people of the Dominican Republic on the 181st anniversary of your independence. I had the privilege of visiting the Dominican Republic during my first trip abroad as Secretary of State. The enduring bond between our nations is evidenced by 141 years of bilateral relations and the vibrant Dominican diaspora in the United States. We also share a dedication to addressing the crisis of illegal migration, combating drug trafficking, and fostering a stable and prosperous Western Hemisphere, including through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative. The United States looks forward to working with the Dominican Republic closely as the host of the next Summit of the Americas later this year. On this important day, we reaffirm our vital partnership and celebrate the lasting friendship between our nations.
