Chamara Sampath Dasanayake granted bail



Former Uva Provincial Councilor Chamara Sampath Dasanayake was released on bail today by Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali on five sureties of Rs.Million 2 each with a cash bail of Rs. 50,000.

The Bribery Commission told the court that the preliminary investigations related to the incident have been concluded, and requested the court to issue an appropriate order regarding the suspect.

President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa, appearing on behalf of the suspect, told the court that the suspect is currently in remand custody in connection with another case in Badulla Magistrate. He further informed that since the preliminary investigations in this matter have been completed, the suspect has no opportunity to influence the witnesses. Accordingly, he requested the court to release the suspect on bail.

President’s Counsel Indatissa also informed the court that the suspect is a Member of Parliament, and the prison authorities have already granted written permission for him to attend parliamentary sessions scheduled for today and tomorrow.

Subsequently, the court directed prison officials to produce the suspect for parliamentary proceedings on both days.

Additionally, the court issued an order imposing a travel ban on the suspect. The case was scheduled to be taken up again on June 17.

He was in remand custody for the allegedly withdrawing of six fixed deposits prematurely in 2016, maintained by the Uva Provincial Council at the National Savings Bank in Badulla.
