Anthony Ripley was a reporter for The Detroit News and arrived in Dallas on November 22nd, hours after the assassination of President Kennedy.
Ripley was sent to cover the unfolding events and arrived at 7:30 PM, unaware of the identity of Kennedy’s assassin at the time.
Ripley was present in the basement of the Dallas Municipal Building (DMB) when Lee Harvey Oswald was shot. He recalled being hesitant as he made his way to the basement, where he observed a crowded environment filled with police and media personnel.
Ripley stated that he was about twenty feet away from the actual shooting, but the chaos and crowd made it difficult for him to see the incident clearly. After Oswald was shot, he was approached by a police officer who asked him to identify himself.
Ripley mentioned a television interview conducted with Bill De Mar, a ventriloquist and master of ceremonies at the Carousel Club, where Oswald was alleged to have been seen. This interview took place shortly after the shooting and highlighted the confusion surrounding Oswald’s connections. Additionally, he noted that Joyce Eggerton, a reporter for the London Sunday Observer, suggested interviewing De Mar about Oswald, indicating the ongoing media interest in the events.
