The Guardians of the Homeland: My Journey with the FBI.
As an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), I’ve had the privilege of working to keep America safe from a variety of threats, both domestic and international. The FBI is a vast organization with over 36,000 employees, 56 field offices, and more than 350 smaller offices nationwide. We tackle challenges such as terrorism, cybercrime, organized crime, and corruption. Let me take you through some real cases and personal experiences that show how our work impacts everyday Americans.
After the 9/11 attacks, our focus at the FBI shifted significantly towards preventing terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. We formed Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTFs), combining federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

In 2010, we uncovered a plot by Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a Somali-American student, who planned to detonate a car bomb during Portland, Oregon’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Our team, through the JTTF, conducted an undercover operation to monitor and ultimately thwart Mohamud’s plans.
Now, let’s talk about Fighting Cybercrime.
In today’s digital age, new types of crime have emerged. As part of the FBI’s Cyber Division, I focus on combating cyber threats such as hacking, identity theft, and child exploitation.
Do you know about Operation Phish?
In 2009, we dismantled an international phishing ring during Operation Phish. This operation involved over 100 suspects in the United States and Egypt who had stolen millions of dollars through online banking fraud.
By working closely with Egyptian authorities and using cyber forensics, we arrested the perpetrators and ended one of the largest phishing schemes in history.
Another crucial part of our mission at the FBI is protecting the civil rights of American citizens. This involves investigating hate crimes, human trafficking, and police misconduct.
Who can forget The Mississippi Burning?
In the summer of 1964, three civil rights workers disappeared in Mississippi. The FBI launched a massive investigation, which became known as the “Mississippi Burning” case. This was a defining moment for the Bureau in demonstrating our commitment to civil rights.
Through relentless investigation and undercover work, we uncovered the involvement of local law enforcement and the Ku Klux Klan, leading to convictions that resonated throughout the civil rights movement. In addition, the FBI has a long history of fighting organized crime, from early 20th-century mobsters to modern-day gangs and cartels.
From stopping terrorist attacks and fighting cybercrime to defending civil rights and dismantling organized crime syndicates, our efforts are felt across the nation. Through dedication and bravery, we ensure that justice and safety are upheld, providing a shield against those who seek to harm the United States. These stories are a testament to the positive impact that diligent and courageous law enforcement can have on society.
