VOA60 America- U.S. Secretary of State Blinken, Israeli Defense Minister Gallant speak by phone


The U.S. State Department said late Sunday that Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed “U.S. opposition to a major military ground operation in Rafah” as he spoke by telephone with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The statement said Blinken reaffirmed U.S. commitment to “the shared objective of the defeat of Hamas,” while also highlighting the need to protect civilians.

Jury selection is expected to begin on Monday in the corruption trial of Democratic Senator from New Jersey Robert Menendez. The senator was charged for alleged peddling of his political influence to help Egypt’s and Qatar’s governments. He pleaded not guilty.

Michael Cohen, a former lawyer and one-time political fixer for Donald Trump, is set to testify on Monday in Trump’s hush money trial. The former president is accused of falsifying business records to cover up a payment to a porn star for her silence about their alleged encounter ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Trump has pleaded not guilty.

Commencement ceremonies across U.S. universities remained largely peaceful over the weekend. Weeks of student protests against the war in Gaza roiled U.S. campuses in recent weeks and resulted in nearly 2,900 arrests at 57 colleges and universities.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” has reigned over the weekend box office with $56.5 million in North American theaters, according to studio estimates. Ryan Gosling’s “The Fall Guy” was No. 2 with $13.7 million.
