Washington Today (5-18-23): Speaker McCarthy wants debt ceiling increase deal vote next week

With two weeks to go until a possible U.S. default on its national debt, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says about talks between his office and the White House on raising the debt ceiling, “I think we have a structure now and everybody’s working hard.” And he says he would like the House to vote on a bill next week.

Senate Banking Committee Ranking Republican Tim Scott (SC) is calling for firings at the Federal Reserve over its failure to take steps that could have prevented the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.
