On August 28, 2017, Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies called in Border Patrol agents after discovering that the driver of a truck they’d pulled over couldn’t speak English. Officers appear to use an ethnic slur while discussing the driver’s legal status.
Advocates say the incident illustrates a major problem in Vermont: Local cops are reporting undocumented immigrants to federal authorities, even though immigration law isn’t in their purview.
