Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. An investigation by The New York Times published over the weekend found that New York City’s private yeshivas deprived students of a basic education, while taking $1 billion in state money. The report’s release comes right before a critical vote that could potentially regulate the religious schools more stringently. Mayor Eric Adams waved off the report on Monday, saying the city would conduct its own independent investigation. (New York City Patch)
  2. Elected officials visited Rikers Island unannounced on Monday following the release of a report analyzing six suicides and four drug-related deaths. The report found that a lack of communication between correctional officers led incarcerated individuals to receive inadequate mental and physical healthcare. (AMNY)
  3. Some New Yorkers have been receiving surprise bills from CityMD for COVID tests they took there up to more than two years ago. They thought the tests would be free, but in some cases the bills have been as much as $300 which CityMD says insurance companies refuse to pay. The New York-based company began sending out the bills over the summer. (Gothamist)
  4. Supermodels joined New York State Senator Brad Hoylman to protest the lack of regulations in the fashion industry in the midst of New York Fashion Week. Despite the industry employing 4.6 percent of NYC’s workforce pre-pandemic, predatory management agencies operate without oversight, they said. (AMNY)
  5. Employees — many of them immigrants — hired to clean NYC’s subways throughout the pandemic have an uncertain future ahead of them as the MTA prepares to phase out their jobs. They’re hoping for more permanent and unionized positions with the agency. (THE CITY)
