The President of India has delegated fresh powers to Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
This comes in the wake of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government launching fresh attack on the Delhi LG, V.K. Saxena, accusing him of undue interference.
In the last few days, the AAP government in Delhi has upped the ante against Saxena, projecting him as the villain, an outsider, and a nobody.
The fact that the LG has given a go-ahead to several pending corruption cases has further angered the Delhi CM, whose carefully crafted image of “kattar imandar” has taken a serious hit.

AAP’s Lies On Teacher Training
The recent confrontation occurred when the Delhi LG requested that the department responsible for sending school teachers to Finland for training perform a cost-benefit analysis.
The AAP portrayed the situation as the LG halting the entire program.
Despite clarification from the LG office, the Delhi CM and his MLAs staged a protest, accusing the LG of misconduct and verbally abusing him on the floor of the Delhi assembly.
LG’s Letter to CM Kejriwal
CM Kejriwal went on to ask, “Who is the LG”, and “Where has he come from” and accused him of sitting on the “head of an elected government”.
Saxena, in a letter, responded to the attack on him in the Assembly by saying, “As for the question of “who is the LG” and “where did he come from”, that can be easily answered by briefly referencing the Constitution of India.
As for the rest of the comments, they do not warrant a response as they clearly reflect a low level of discourse.”
The LG also stated that he is not acting as a “headmaster,” as Kejriwal had sarcastically commented, but rather as a “benign yet conscientious voice” for the people as outlined in the Constitution of India.
In his letter, the Delhi LG brought to attention the gaping holes in the claims made by the AAP government about its education model.
He wrote that enrolment in government schools stood at 16.1 lakhs during 2012-14. It has consistently come down to 15.1 lakhs in 2019-20. This is despite the fact that the population of the city grew, and enrolment should have increased proportionately.
He also highlighted that not a single school came up in the last years despite the DDA allowing 13 plots to the Education Department.
Adding classrooms in existing schools and counting toilets as classrooms, do not, by any stretch of the imagination, amount to opening new schools.
What Awaits Mayoral Elections?
The next round of AAP’s grumbling about Delhi LG’s role would manifest during the oath taking ceremony of the newly elected MCD councillors and 10 aldermen nominated by the LG on 24 January.
A preview of what is to come was already seen on the first day of the MCD session on 4 January, when AAP councillors and MLAs broke microphones, stormed into the House and engaged in violence to disrupt the proceedings.
After the oath ceremony, elections for the MCD mayor were scheduled, but that also got delayed.
Why is AAP After the LG?
AAP has a lot to worry about.
Despite coming to power in Punjab, it has not been able to control the incidents of stubble burning in the state. Its failure has a direct bearing on the air pollution in the capital where it has been in power for the past 8 years.
It has failed to deliver on its promise of cleaning Yamuna. Some of its top ministers are embroiled in cases of corruption. The government’s Health Minister has been lodged in jail for months on the charges of money laundering.
By consistently positioning itself in opposition to an imagined enemy, it aims to turn the narrative around.
