mgnrega: Central teams likely to audit MGNREGA, Gramin Sadak schemes in West Bengal
On Thursday, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and BJP national president JP Nadda had sparred over allegations of corruption in central government schemes in the state, including PM Awas Yojana – which comes with a pucca house and a toilet – and the government’s flagship rural job guarantee scheme, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Banerjee had alleged that the Centre has stopped all funds for the central government schemes, including MGNREGA and Gramin Sadak Yojana, increasing the plight of the poor.
The people cited earlier said the central government teams are likely to begin touring these districts from January 23, adding that the rural development ministry has written to the state government informing it about the upcoming visits.
The ministry has also asked the state government to provide logistic support for the central teams, according to sources in the state secretariat.
The letter also mentioned that the “national-level monitoring team” will carry out field visits in 12 districts. According to sources, central teams will also carry out similar field work in 25 other states.
“In the first stage, the central teams will visit Purulia, Hooghly and South 24 Parganas districts. In the next phase, the central teams are likely to visit West and East Midnapore districts and North 24 Parganas, people in the know said.The visits are likely to continue till the first week of February, according to sources.
Nadda was on a two-day tour of Bengal. On the allegations of corruption, Nadda said the state is marred with corruption but “didi” lashes out when central teams are sent here. “Prime Minister Modi sends money for various schemes and they (TMC) resort to corrupt practices.”
